The Ohio and Erie Canal National Historic Corridor

Cuyahoga County Attractions

This page will promote the northern end of the Ohio and Erie Canal National Historic Corridor, from the shore of Lake Erie at Cleveland Harbor to the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Construction of the section of the Canal from Akron to Cleveland was commenced July 4, 1825, and was opened to commerce with great celebration on July 4, 1827. Operation of the Canal ceased after the flood of 1913, when the State Legislature determined it was no longer economically useful to repair the flood damage.

In the unofficial Sports Corridor, this segment features the Bob Feller Statue and Cleveland Indians Museum at Jacobs Field; Cleveland Browns Stadium; the marinas of Cleveland Lakefront Park; Gund Arena, home of the Cavs, Rockers, Lumberjacks, and Crunch; and Cleveland State University, home of the Vikings and site of the 2000 NCAA Midwest Regional Men's Basketball Tournament.

The Cleveland Metroparks Ohio and Erie Canal Reservation extends from East 49th Street in Cleveland along Canal Road to the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area at Rockside Road in Valley View, past restaurants and taverns that have fed and watered the transportation and manufacturing industries for a century and a half. This looks north along the Canal toward the Interstate 480 Cuyahoga Valley Bridge, from the Floodwater Cafe.

The Canal Visitor Center of the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area in Valley View presents demonstrations of the operation of the restored Lock 38 for the public on summer weekends. The Visitor Center, at 7104 Canal Road, is operated by the National Park Service. Located south of Rockside Road, the building housing the Visitor Center was formerly a lock-keeper's house, tavern and store, originally built about 1827.
